The Ringworld

The "Ringworld," also known as a Type I Dyson Sphere, is an artificial ring about a million miles wide and approximately the diameter of Earth's orbit (which makes it about 600 million miles in circumference), centered about a star (which the survey team has dubbed “Dyson”), and rotating to provide an Earthlike artificial gravity, with a habitable flat inner surface equivalent in area to approximately three million Earth-sized planets.

On the Ringworld the sun is always at midday, (unless something is seriously wrong) and to simulate the cycle of day and night that the inhabitants of natural, spherical worlds enjoy the makers of the Ringworld put a string of black squares ("shadow squares") linked by strong wires ("shadow square wires") into orbit around the central star at a distance of about the orbit of Mercury, and rotating at slightly faster than the Ringworld's spin. These squares cast huge shadows onto the surface of the Ringworld, which, as they move simulate day and night. The initial survey team also speculates that these “shadow squares” also absorb much of the suns energy and somehow transmit that energy to the Ringworld, operating as its battery.

One consequence of the structure of the Ringworld is that wherever you stand on its surface you will be able to see, in the very far distance, ahead of you and behind you the Ring rising up above you. During the day it is faint and the sun will obscure it higher up, but at night it is a glorious sight as alternate strips of lit and shadowed Ringworld surface rise up to meet at the zenith. It will look as if a huge arch stands over you.

At this time, it is unknown exactly how much of the Ringworld’s surface is made up of landmass, and how much is water. Rough estimates have the water ratio at 30%, though it may be as high as 50%. Dyson Base is located on a “island,” roughly equivalent in landmass to western Europe. The initial survey team has taken to calling this land mass Primus.

Native Life Forms

Besides a large verity of plant life, the Ringworld also boasts an incredible verity of animal and insect life as well. Many of them so far are terrestrial in nature, similar to those found on Earth and other worlds the SGC has charted. As of this time, no detailed information has been gathered on the flora of fauna of the Ringworld, though scientists under Dr. Smith are being assigned this very task, and a report will be forth coming.

In the mean time, there seems to be a verity of intelligent life native (or at least, transplanted) to the Ringworld. SG-4 has personally encountered two of these groups, which include a human population known as the Kamari, and a strange reptellian race who call themselves the . Bellow is the basic information on both of these populations as gathered by SG-4.

The Kamari

As on many worlds with a Stargate, the Ringworld has a population of humans. Though it is clear that the builders of the Stargate network did not build the Ringworld, they did have a presence here evidenced by the existence of a Stargate. Located near the original location of the gate, in a valley near Dyson Base, is a small population of humans who refer to themselves as the Kamari. They appear to be derived from Celtic and Gaul stock. At this time, it is unknown how they were brought to the Ringworld originally, as they have no memory or legends of anything resembling a Goa’ould, who seem to be the main reason for humans on other worlds. Team Beta is being assigned to work with this group to find out more about their origins.

There are at least two Kamari settlements near Dyson base, one near the original gate location, which seems to be mostly a farming community, and a second near a river, which seems to be both a fishing and logging community. There are several smaller communities spread throughout the valley as well, and initial estimates have the population at near 500. Though not truly warlike, it is not uncommon for various communities to settle disputes with “war,” which mostly consists of small bands of young men with spears or bronze short swords battling until one side concedes. War as we know it is unknown to these people.

The Kamari have recognized the threats presented by the Goa’ould Morpheus, as well as the aliens known as the N’sss. They have agreed to a mutual defense pact with the SGC, allowing their men and women to work with us in return for our aid should either of these threats attack them again.

The Kinori

This race of dinosaur-like reptiles mostly seems to inhabit the jungle regions of Primus to the south of Dyson Base. They’re primarily nocturnal, meaning that their daily activities happen at night, and their cities sleep during the day. Not much is known about them biologically, though Team Delta has been sent to the closest city of theirs to barter for this information, along with trade pacts and such. They have a very industrial based society, with a technology level equivalent to that of mid to late 19th century Earth. They posses firearms, burn coal for fuel, have primitive motor vehicles and even have steam powered river boats. Though they have firearms and magazine loading rifles, automatic rifles are beyond their current level of technology.

Recently, the Goa’ould Morpheus has made his presence know to the Kinori, splitting the populace in a cold war over worship of him. His followers have taken to making their rifles appear as crude staff weapons, and while he will no doubt aid them technology as he is capable, he has no real Jaffa amongst the Kinori, and his followers are still a small minority.

Threats

There are so far two main threats recognized on the Ringworld. These are the Goa’ould Morpheus and the aliens called the N’sss.

Morpheus

Morpheus, the “Lord of Dreams,” appears so far to be a typical Goa’ould, though with a slightly more scientific bent. He is armed with a staff weapon, a ribbon device and a cloaking field that renders him practically invisible. So far, he has eluded SG-4’s attempt to capture him, and has managed to create a following of worshipers amongst the Reptilians. Though he lacks a true Jaffa army, he is to be considered a grave threat, and treated as a hostile at all times. The SGC would like him captured and returned to Earth alive if possible.

The N’sss

The N’sss are a newly encountered race, and so far appear to not be native to the Ringworld. They were first encountered when Morpheus activated a device that signaled them. They descended on Dyson Base and the village of the Kamari. They appeared to be spherical in basic shape, extending several tentacle-like appendages that allow for movement and manipulation. They wore was appeared to be some sort of body armor, and there were two different configurations of this armor observed by SG-4. The first was larger and carried weapons. The weapons consisted of a cannon or rifle on one arm, and an energy blade of some sort in the other, as well as a small missile launcher on the shoulder with two missiles. The second type was smaller, and seemed to be configured for prisoner capture. So far, their hostilities have been limited to capturing prisoners, with the weapon configuration apparently running defense for the smaller type, though for what purpose is not known at this time. They are to be considered a threat, and all future contact with them is to be handled with extreme caution.
